Halloween Costumes for Plus Sizes

Have you ever read suggestions for plus-size Halloween costumes that said that hippos or other large animals were a good idea? A lot of costume ideas for larger than life folks make them look and feel ridiculous. There’s a better way to find something to wear this October 31st.

Maybe the best idea of all is to ignore your size and dress up as your favorite fantasy. Large people can be found in rock bands, dance contests (think Hairspray), movies and opera. There are nurses, doctors, teachers, librarians, truck drivers and all kind of other workers we meet everyday who will never fit into their pre-pregnancy clothes.

Just buy a cheap pair of scrubs at your local super-mart, add some cheap dollar-store accessories, and you’re ready to roll. Or, there’s the other extreme, go as yourself, only better. With cheap makeup, some costume jewelry and a thrift store gown, you can go as a whole different version of your usual workaday self. If your friends have never seen you in anything but jeans, this kind of costume can make a big impression.

If you’re trying to downplay a large belly, you could always go as someone who has something in front of them. A guitar, a keyboard, a clipboard or beach towel even. The only limit is your imagination. How about a waiter with a tray?

Loose, flowing robes (easily made from curtains or sheets) can disguise a rotund figure and make you look like anything from a Roman to a ghost. If you don’t mind expense, there are costumes that hang from your shoulders on straps and are made to look like cars, furniture and all kinds of things.

Find a large, stuffed animal and attach it to your shirt, so that it’s in front of you but you still have the use of your hands. How about a baby in a sling? A “broken arm” with a huge sling and a fake cast on your leg? A huge rubber snake around your neck and hanging down to your knees?

Use your imagination and you’ll see that you don’t have to play the fool to be cool on Halloween. Of course, after all that candy, you might want to consider doing something about your weight – but not until after the Halloween party is over.
